Brrr, baby it’s cold outside! As winter weather has started to clutch us in its icy grasp I wanted to talk about how to stay warm. I did write about safely starting up your furnace in a previous post but want to take it further.
Never, ever, ever use your oven to heat your house. Your house may warm up while you are cooking but your oven is not a furnace and should not be used for anything other than cooking! Ensure you turn it off after proper use.
Space heaters can be great and can be dangerous too. Do not obstruct a space heater in any way. Especially do not throw clothes or blankets on it. Fabric can heat up to temperatures that can cause it to ignite. Even treated fabrics will loose their flame retardant abilities after many washings. Just don’t take a chance! Do not put anything on a space heater. Also have a care for the cord, it can be a trip hazard and cords should never be run under a rug.
Wear a hat and layers when you go outside. If you get warm you can loosen up some of your layers but you want to start out warm. But don’t wear so many clothes that you cannot navigate. The kid in the movie The Christmas Story was cute but that is not a good look on us. No falling due to restrictive clothes.
Also, be mindful of your footwear. Winter weather requires warm and dry feet. Your footwear should not leak, be non-slip and be comfortable and safe to walk in.
The holidays are almost here – let’s get to them warm and safe!
