According to www.history.com/this-day-in-history Richard Byrd, the American explorer, flew over the South Pole. He was not alone; he had three companions. Why is any of this pertinent? Well, I’m not saying we need to be famous explorers and go to the South Pole or even the North Pole but getting up and doing something, learning something new and having a few good companions will lead to a healthier and perhaps longer life.is good for us.
I have often advocated exercise in this blog and, with your doctor’s consent, still do. Get up, walk around, bundle up and go outside, if you can. But move. Exercise is good for the entire body and the mind too. But let’s take it a little further. If you can go for a walk, take a different route. Don’t let your exercise and movement get stuck in a rut. Just taking a different route can build new pathways in your brain…making it exercise too. If you mall walk and it is too far to go to a different mall, park in a different spot and go a different way.
If you can, take up a new hobby. Learn an instrument, how to crochet, or a new language. This does not do as much for your body but will do great things for your brain.
Having some companions along for the ride is good too. They can engage us, motivate us, share new ideas and, hopefully, a few laughs and new adventures. People who have a social life, whether through their church or other avenues are found to be healthier and have less aging brain issues such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
So, let’s find our own south pole to explore and take a couple of friends along for the ride.
