What am I talking about in this week’s title? Salmonella and food poisoning, that’s what! I just read another article about chicken linking it to salmonella related food poisoning. So it is up to whoever cooks your food to ensure that it is safe.
Luckily – that is not hard to achieve!
First – do not try to wash off the chicken. All that does is splash any bacteria or pathogens around your sink and nearby counter tops. If you need to, pat the chicken dry with paper towel and then dispose of the paper towel promptly.
Second – designate a certain knife and cutting board for chicken. And then do Not use them for anything else. This is the safest way to prepare raw chicken. But, for some people this is just not possible. If that is case, wash the board and knife immediately after using, do not wait, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.00. Wash with hot, hot soapy water and either change the washcloth out for a new one or wash the sponge too (however, the dishwasher is best for high enough washing temperatures).
The idea here is that we just do not want to cross contaminate our foods. Raw meat, especially poultry, and raw eggs should not come in contact with foods that do not need to be cooked, like salads, or foods that do not need to be cooked to high temperatures, like vegetables.
Third – cook thoroughly. Use a meat thermometer and cook until it reads well done for the type of meat you are cooking.
Enjoy your meals and have a great weekend!
