Our bedrooms tend to be a safe haven, a warm welcoming place that we snuggle into every night and resist leaving in the bright light of day. Well, that is how I feel about it some days anyway.
If your bedroom is your favorite place or just your favorite place to sleep, there are a few things you can and should do to make it safer.
You should always have good lighting. Place a lamp close to the bed so that you can reach it without getting out of bed. The lamp, whether a floor or table lamp, should have a sturdy, stable base so it will stay upright. Always keep a working flashlight near as well in case the power goes out.
If it won’t keep you awake, have a night light in the bedroom. Have one in hallways for certain. Even better, a nightlight with a battery is better in the hall in the case of that pesky power outage.
You know how I feel about floor rugs…but if you must have them – keep them out of high traffic areas. And every room should be free of clutter but especially the path you take from bed to the bathroom.
Right next to that bedside lamp should be a telephone. It should be reachable directly from your bed.
If you have a television in the bedroom, ensure that the remote is handy to turn it off without getting out of bed.
Oh and get a good night’s rest too!!
