I think I live in my kitchen more than my living room, you? But anyway, whichever room is your favorite for living, entertaining or relaxing in – let’s keep it safe, shall we?
Is there enough lighting? Are the lights stable if they are table or floor lamps? Are the entryway light switches easy to reach? There should not be trip hazards in the living room (more on that in a minute) but there should be enough lighting in the room to easily see where you are going. There should be good lamps for reading too, but only if you like to read or do the crossword.
But there should be no clutter on the floor, no piles of magazines or books or newspapers. No empty pizza boxes or beer cans… oh wait that is college dorm rooms. But seriously, no trip hazards and no clutter on surfaces that can present a trip hazard if knocked off a table. There should be no electrical cords in walk ways and definitely not under any rugs. And, while pretty, no area rugs either.
Is there enough seating in the room so you are not improvising with step stools or end tables? Those are not actually designed to be seats! Can you get in and out of your furniture easily? If not, it may be time for some new furniture.
Can you reach the telephone and TV remote without having to get up (at least from your favorite chair)? Especially if you are alone, you should have access to a phone or emergency button at all time. Having the TV remote handy is a good idea too. But don’t be a couch potato either.
When you walk around the house, in any room, you should have shoes on. Walking in stocking feet is a slippery proposition…wear your slippers or some shoes.
Live safely in your living room and enjoy your home.
Let us know which room of your house is your favorite to live in!
