Who knew? I certainly didn’t, although I am not surprised. I am sure that many New Year’s Resolutions include a resolution to loose weight or go on a diet. In fact the number of people on a diet at any given time is about 100 million and the diet industry, as a whole, is a 20 billion dollar business. (source: ABCnews.go.com). But there is so much information available and much of it is conflicting, how is a person to know what really is healthy and what is right for them?
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) tells us that we should think lifestyle not diet and that staying in control of our weight will contribute to our good health, now and in the future. I have talked about health and exercise in the past but it is still so important now and for our future health. The years may creep up on us but we need to keep the extra pounds from creeping up on our waists and behinds as well.
A healthy lifestyle is key. You really don’t need to spend a bunch of money supporting the diet industry. In fact, some of the fad diets can be dangerous and some lack important nutrients.
I think most of us already know what is needed for health and weight loss. For weight loss, calories burned must be greater than calories taken in. But the calories taken in matter too, 200 calories of a healthy salad are very different to a 200-calorie soda.
So let’s celebrate weight loss awareness month by being aware of what we eat and having a healthy lifestyle.
