First and foremost, the BIG disclaimer: I am not a doctor and I do not play one on TV. What I am about to tell you MUST be discussed with your own doctor. But since there is some conflicting information out there, I wanted to give you information to do so with more confidence.
As a paramedic, I gave a dose of aspirin to almost anyone with chest pain. There are few restrictions when it comes to aspirin and it can have a huge benefit. Aspirin will stop platelets in your blood from forming a clot - which prevents heart attacks and strokes. Given immediately after a heart attach, it helps prevent another one. It is also a pain, fever and inflammation reducer. It has many uses, both preventative and curative.
Very few people are allergic to it. It may cause ulcers or bleeding in the stomach. Therefore, it should be used in caution in people who are on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder (check with your doctor). It should not be given to children or teens that have flu-like symptoms because it has the potential to cause a life-threatening condition.
If you are on daily aspirin, you should not stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to. Stopping it can increase your risk of a heart attack. However, there still may be a more important reason to stop taking it. Overall, aspirin is a beneficial drug when used as prescribed by your doctor!
An apple a day, now that you can do without talking to your doctor!
