Aging does not have to = falling. Here are some simple things to help you stay steady.
During your annual physical (you do get one of those don’t you?!?) have your hearing and eyesight checked. Your inner ear is part of your balance control. Problems in there can affect balance. You need to see well to avoid potential fall hazards. If you wear glasses or contacts be sure to clean them regularly as well to improve vision.
During that physical, also get your doctor’s ok to participate in an exercise program. Exercise does not have to be strenuous to improve balance, flexibility, strength and overall well being. It does have to be done regularly. But who doesn’t want all of those benefits?!
Also, review your medications with your doctor. Some have dizziness as a side effect and some interact with each other. See if you need everything you are taking and that they are safe to take together.
When walking around the house, wear shoes or at least slippers. No running around in your stocking feet! Too slippery! Make sure shoes are slip proof or broken in. I can remember my Dad taking sandpaper to the bottoms of my new shoes when I was a kid. Anyone else have his or her Dad do that?
If you do end up feeling dizzy, sit down and allow enough time for the dizziness to clear. When you feel better, stand up slowly and hold onto something steady.
Make sure you are hydrated. Not drinking enough water can lead to dizziness as well. Practice these simple tips for improved balance. Have a safe day!
Do you have any other ideas to help us improve our balance? Let me know...Thanks!
