October is just around the corner and that used to be the month of the fall time change…but even though the time change has changed; it is still time to change the battery in your smoke detector.
Unless, of course yours is hard wired into your home’s electrical system or you don’t want to be (or shouldn’t be) on a ladder. (And if that is the case, A Time for Care staff can help!).
Working smoke detectors save lives…please ensure yours is working or enlist some help to check it.
You also need a working carbon monoxide in your home too. At a minimum, you need a smoke detector on every level of your home and a carbon monoxide detector near where you sleep.
Smoke detectors need the battery changed BUT every ten years the detector needs to be changed as well. Both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have a shelf life! And carbon monoxide detectors have a shorter one… they only last for 5-7 years depending on the manufacturer.
The life you save could be your own. Change the batteries twice a year. Change the detector every 5-7 or 10 years.
Good news – your local fire department can help… give them a call and see what kind of fire prevention programs they have.
