Throw rugs or area rugs can liven up a room with a splash of color, design or decoration. However, both toddlers and seniors can find this a slip or trip hazard. Falls in the home are one of the highest causes of preventable death. But the good news is: there are ways to have your rug and make it safe too!
Location, Location, Location…avoid placing a rug in a high traffic area. Hallways, walkways to and from much used chairs, tables or rooms are not a good place for a rug. And absolutely no rugs near any stairs.
Size matters…a larger rug is less likely to move on its own and can replace multiple smaller rugs that present an extra hazard with every extra rug.
Add a non-slip mat under the rug to help keep it in place.
Repair any tears or holes in the rug so they are not an extra trip hazard. If it is beyond repair…or if in doubt, throw it out!
If the edges curl up, tack or tape them down.
Do not run electrical cords under a rug, this is both a trip hazard and a fire hazard as well.
Keep your home looking good and safe with these tips!
